about david

"David Krysko is a fine artist and a member of the Portrait Society of Canada, living in Toronto. He specializes in Oil, Watercolour and dry media, using classical and modern applications.

David has always gravitated to the masters and traditional styles. Although largely self taught, David attended Emily Carr College of Art and Design (now Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design) in Vancouver, and The Academy of Realist Art in Toronto where he learned the foundations of French Classical Realism.

Always drawing and painting, through the years, David has worked as a Wildlife artist, Graphic Designer, Muralist, Art Teacher, and Street artist.

David has just completed a reproduction of a Renaissance painting by Han Hoffman in watercolour and bodycolour on vellum. He is currently working on a series of photography/painting re-imaginations of masters painting from the Frick Gallery (New York) with Iden Ford and completing a series of Egyptian Landscapes and Cityscapes in a Classical Orientalist style, as well as multiple portrait commissions."

Custom Paintings and Portraits

Some of the most precious things on earth are works of Art.

Consider commissioning an oil painting for Weddings, Anniversaries, Presents and to create the right look in your favorite room. Many have already discovered the value and magic of having a real painting of their Loved Ones rather than a photograph.

An image speaks a thousand words. Lets create a masterpiece for you.

The Portrait Process

If I am creating a portrait from photographs, I require 5-6 hi res photos with one identified as the main photo to base the portrait on. We discuss the final look and size, and I will create compositional sketches. Once the final look is decided upon, a deposit of one third is made and the portrait contract is signed. When the painting is completed and varnished, it is ready for pick-up or delivery.

The more traditional manner is to do a personal photo shoot or paint. It starts with discussing the look, size and style of the painting, what clothes to wear and what the background will look like. Then we have the photo shoot at the appropriate location. It is a relaxed photo shoot. Next, sketches are made and we review them and refine the look for the painting. Once the final look is decided upon, a deposit of one third is made and the portrait contract is signed. When the painting is completed and varnished, it is ready for pick-up or delivery.

The most traditional manner is to paint a realistic portrait from life done in several sittings. It starts with a meeting to discuss the look, size and style of the painting, what clothes to wear and what the background will look like. Then we meet at the appropriate location and sketches and photos are made and we solidify the look for the painting. Once the final look is decided upon, a deposit of one third is made and the portrait contract is signed. The painting will take several sittings  and will be completed from life. The painting is completed in the traditional way with layers and glazes. This gives them a beauty and luminosity that cannot be seen in a photograph. When the painting is completed and varnished, it is ready for pick-up or delivery.

A modern way that a painting is completed today is Alla Prima, also known as direct painting. This is when the painting is painted and completed in one sitting, usually 1.5 to 3hrs.
I can complete Alla Prima paintings from photographs or from life, with the same specifics as above.

The price includes materials but not framing or shipping.

I only use the best quality oil paints and materials. I prefer Rublev paints paints and use their paints whenever possible.

I normally paint on gessoed wood panel with back support or gessoed Masonite panels. There are other support options I can use such as ACM panels for an added cost.

Oil painting completed in the Classical Realist style. Painted in Layers and Glazes, it is a matter of finish.

Oil painting completed Alla Prima. Also known as Direct Painting. Painted Wet on Wet in one sitting or 2.
